Currently, our main source for irrigation in the vineyard is the pond picture above. Manmade, it contains a healthy population of fish who entertain our staff, neighbors, friends, and their children endlessly! The debate among our winemaking staff is whether or not it would be more efficient to store the water in large tanks to prevent evaporation, especially considering our water needs as the vineyard swells from 240-300 acres.
Additionally we are in the process of exploring the property in search of potential well sites. Aside from the blocks that are dry farmed and thus exempt from irrigation consideration beyond the first three years of their lives, the vineyard has fairly predictable water needs year to year, we irrigate minimally and in heavy rain years (like 2010/2011!) only on particulary hot days. Fundamental to sustainability on a property this large is considering not only the needs of next year, or even the following year, but the hundred years to come!
